The Best Beer to Pair With Thanksgiving Dinner

So every year I get asked what’s the best beer to pair with Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a question I’ve thought about for years and so I figured I’d throw my take out there for anyone with this same query.

For me, it’s the Belgian Golden ale. With all the savory-centric foods, I like that it’s not too sweet, but still very flavorful with tons of fruits and light hop presence. It’s high ABV (~9%) means you won’t fill up on liquid too; a bonus. Plus, these beers usually come in festive 750 ml bottles which are always fun to bring to a gathering, especially with craft beer newbies.

Brands that should be fairly easy to find would be Duvel, Delirium Tremens, or North Coast Pranqster. If you wanted to get adventurous try to track down Allagash Confluence, a Belgian Golden Ale (ish) fermented with brettanomyces and aged in wine barrels.

Denver’s Chef ‘n’ Brew Event This Thursday

This Thursday is the Chef and Brew Festival. A very cool event that pairs some of the best local Brewer’s and Chefs. A very similar concept to GABF’s Farm to Table Pavilion  but with a much more reasonable price tag. Last year’s fest was great, but a bit overcrowded as the venue overestimated how many hungry revelers they could accommodate. This year’s fest, instead at the EXDO Center, promises plenty of room to accommodate your beer and food consumption. It has come time once again for the most exciting beer and food festival to descend upon Denver.  Chef & Brew 2013 is back and better than ever.  EXDO Event Center will host this year’s event on November 14th from 7-10pm with VIP Ticket holders gaining 1 hour early access.  The event named “Best New Festival” by Westword Readers features over fifteen top chefs and brewers in a competition to create the ultimate beer and food pairing.  Attendees will have the opportunity to sample a plethora of one of a kind food alongside the best craft beer our region has to offer and pick the overall winner.  A portion of sales will benefit Project Angel Heart.

This year’s event features an all-star line-up and a larger venue with plenty of room to enjoy and truly examine each of the beer and food pairings.  “We want people to take their time and notice the true harmonies in the pairings,” says Chef Michael Long.  “We want people to be talking about the pairings they enjoyed at the event for years to come,” adds Mike Burns.  Last year’s winning dish by Jay Leandro of Pub 17 in the Hyatt (a homemade blue corn pork taco) was such a hit it ended up on the menu in their restaurant.  “Chefs and brewers love a challenge and the Chef & Brew Competition is a great stage for them to showcase their craft,” says Chef Michael Long.

Beer and Food will be served in a tasting format, 2oz beer pours paired with an appetizer from each chef.  Guests will receive a souvenir tasting glass with full access to the beer and food once inside.  The 2012 festival sold out in advance and this year’s tickets are selling even quicker.
